For years I used my Stanley 71 router plane in blissful ignorance. I was happy that it was easy to adjust and maneuver. In the past couple of years, my love for the No. 71 has been shaken, first by the Veritas Router Plane, and now by the new Lie-Nielsen Large Router Plane. Both tools are a serious challenge to the old 71, especially in the depth-stop area. Should you buy a new router-plan? And if so which one?
First, here’s the answer to your first question. If you have ever been frustrated by the router plane’s ability to hit a mark repeatedly, then it is time to sell the junk on eBay and move on to the Ductile Side.
Both the Veritas and Lie-Nielsen are made of unbreakable ductile iron, which isnt quite reason enough to buy them, but it is one of the few traits that both tools share.
Veritas has taken divergent paths in designing router planes. They are therefore difficult to compare. For more detail on the Veritas, check out my article from the Fine Tool Journal at WKFineTools.com.
The Veritas is a closed-throat router. The Lie-Nielsen is an open-throat one. Whats the difference? An open throat offers better visibility ahead of the cut. Closed throats are more supportive when working with narrow edges such as cleaning a groove from a door stile.
Another significant difference is how you set the depth stop on the tool. Stanleys is a cruel joke. A side-effect. A jerry-rig. The Veritass depth stop is like a drill presss jam-nut system. Although it locks down more tightly than any other system, quick adjustments are not possible. You spin the jam nuts up and down the post quite a lot. But when youre locked, youre locked.
The Lie-Nielsen depth stop is far faster. Its a collar that surrounds the blade. To lock in the final depth adjustment, turn a thumbscrew and work your way up to it. You can monkey the depth-adjust wheels, but it is not possible to make the stop slip. However, the stop is robust enough for most woodworkers.

The pointed blade is particularly helpful when cleaning out recesses with acute corners, such as a dovetail socket in casework. Vintage instruction manuals for router planes play up the fact that the pointed blade is better for producing a show surface. This is a lot of bunk. The pointed blade is handy for getting into tight corners, sort of like the way pointy shoes are good for squashing insects in the corners of rooms.
Also worth noting: The two
Ergonomically, the Veritas looks nicer to drive with its rakish handles, but I found I like the classic straight-up knobs from the Stanley No. 71 that Lie-Nielsen has adopted. This is personal. Some people prefer canted handles. I think it depends on how you hold the tool. Straight knobs work well for an overhand grip (palms resting above the knobs); rakish handles are better when your pinky finger touches the bottom of the tool (palms towards the sides of knobs). Both feel fine and work fine.
As to fit and finish, both tools are over the top. The castings and knurlings are first rate. I think things are a draw on this issue.
Which tool should you choose? The Veritas is the best choice if you are into edge work and cleaning up stop grooves. If your work requires you to hit a varying depths time and time again, Id go with the Lie-Nielsen.
But most of you already know which one youre going to buy. It’s not up to me to decide. Both.
